Generalist Photographer

Everything-ist

I have wondered about stopping at 100; it's a good, round number. This is blog #97, and I enjoy doing them, and wonder if that's enough for me.

Opinions welcome!

My topic today is generalism, and I will try to make it sexier — sorry, Dad, more exciting — than it sounds. The marketing people say create a niche, and they're right (e.g. my recent dance-work), but my personal goal has always been to understand light better and better, and to learn how to compose compelling images, better ... and better. (To learn how to interact with models, better and better.)

On that background, here's what's been happening for me recently.

Tamarack in winter
Northern Manitoba in Winter – Tamarack

Northern Manitoba has occupied an increasing proportion of my time and energy, which is i) the price one pays for caring about people, and ii) an interesting and beautiful photographic playground with a character which I find an acquired taste. A friend described it to me recently as bleak, and at one time I would have agreed.

Not now.

People there say, "Visiting? How do you like it?"

I remind them all, because of my unerring social sensitivity, that I would never go there were it not for family, and am so glad not only to have seen it, but on a recurring basis to let it soak; one can never know the land without having been born there, but something about it is getting into me.

Check out the light.

And some dog got right into my photo. (He was so happy!)

I have an ongoing volunteer project, photographing outdoor, for The Fishwrapper, a monthly arts publication by Medium Effort art supplies, and sponsored by the AOG Gallery. Some months they use one of my photographs.

Not this one (so far), but it gets me out of the studio!

(If anyone has information about the artist(s), then I will add that here.)

Portraiture continues.

My primary message is: I want to photograph you.

If you consider yourself worthy, then get in touch.

If you consider yourself unworthy, then particularly get in touch. This is all about you, all within your control, you can accept or reject any image, and I guarantee complete privacy. The images shown here are all with permission.

Oh, and you have to hear Sue Baker and the Rhythm Makers, great musicians and a fabulous singer.

The biggest challenge and an immensely-rewarding project recently has been dancers. The studio is one thing, and live performance is a very different experience. Check out Aaliyah in Brockville and Kingston Egyptian Raks.

This one, of Angelina, was of her waiting for her entrance, about to perform, not posed.

(And then, she danced. Just wow.)

The General Idea

I like having multiple photographic interests and styles. And I know I'm going to hear about it from my marketing department.

It's all right. They work for me.

As I work for you.

I would love it if you were to subscribe to this blog, and to refer friends; art collectors may find this interesting.

You may wish to look through my larger portfolio. Almost everything is for sale. I favour large wall art, and also deal in books and other small items: prints, notecards, and postcards.

Check out my current Portraiture project. My next model is you (yes I mean you).
